RUBiS Energy Bermuda Ltd has launched its first ever “Fuelling 4 a Cause” competition and promotion as part of the company’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
Graham Redford, Managing Director of RUBiS, said, “September 30th marks RUBiS’ 10th Anniversary of operations in Bermuda. To help celebrate this milestone, we decided to expand our normal charitable giving by developing a competition that will benefit 24 local not-for profits and charities and promote the services that each provides.
“The competition started in July of this year where we reached out to our employees, dealers and dealer’s staff and asked each of them to nominate their 5 favourite not-for-profits and charities. The results were collated and the top 24 were invited to take part in Fuelling 4 a Cause.
“All 24 nominations were then given the opportunity to submit a photo illustrating how RUBiS helps to get them going.”
“All 24 submissions were reviewed by a judging panel and twelve charities were selected to be featured as one of the twelve monthly images for the extremely popular RUBiS 2017 calendar. Additionally, each of these 12 will also participate in the ‘Fuelling 4 a Cause” promotion.”
Jermaine Simons, Sales Manager of RUBiS, said, “From tomorrow, September 28th through to Wednesday November 9th 2016, RUBiS will donate 5c per US Gallon of fuel sold at its network of service stations to the 12 charities chosen.

The Bermuda Karting Club’s continued resurgence has gone up a gear after securing a $25,000 deal with the fuel distributor Rubis.
The two-year sponsorship of the club and the street side of the Bermuda Motorsports Park will go towards safety barriers and “making the track a better experience for spectators”.
Former club president Jason North said: “We’re really pleased to have Rubis come on board. It’s a great opportunity for our facility, and the sponsorship is something we’ve been working towards for a year and a half.
“Hopefully, it helps to bring in other sponsors and helps to grow our sport in Bermuda. It’s a two-year deal and they have first option on renewing — hopefully, they like what they see.
“All of us karters use fuel ... so [the deal] was a no-brainer.”
President Scott Barnes said safety is the priority, with the new-look track set to be rolled out for the start of the new season on September 25.
“It’s huge for us,” Barnes said. “They have shown faith in what we’re doing and this is an opportunity for us to keep growing.”
Graham Redford, the managing director of Rubis Energy Bermuda Ltd, said: “I am very pleased that we are able to continue to support the Bermuda Karting Club.

For Graham Redford it has been a busy first year as managing director of Rubis Energy Bermuda, not least because of the $17.7 million purchase of Bermuda Gas from Ascendant Group in April.
There have been other challenges, including the ongoing weight restrictions on the St George’s swing bridge that mean delivery tankers from the company’s fuel depot at Ferry Reach can carry no more than two-thirds of a full load when traversing the bridge.
And there is the perennial concern of ensuring Bermuda’s fuel reserves don’t run dry. On that score, challenges range from bad weather preventing tanker ships from discharging at the fuel pier, to the island’s relatively small delivery ships being overlooked by international suppliers who are more focused on megatanker business.

The 2017 edition of the Rubis Energy Bermuda calendar is shaping up to be something extra special as the company celebrates its first ten years on the island.
Each year around 15,000 of the calendars are distributed at Rubis service stations across the island.
As part of this year’s celebrations to mark the anniversary of Rubis coming to Bermuda and buying Shell’s Bermuda operations in 2006, the company asked its staff, dealers and newly-acquired Bermuda Gas workers to list their top five choices for charities they would like to support.
From the suggestions a list of 24 charities was identified to take part in a competition and promotion.
Each of the organisations has been asked to submit photographs to demonstrate how Rubis gets the “charity going”.

Troop soldiers from the Royal Bermuda Regiment (RBR) have completed a major exercise designed to cope with an oil spill in island waters.
The RBR teamed up with fuel suppliers Rubis and Oil Spill Response Ltd (OSRL) for the exercise, which was based around a petroleum spill from a vessel docked at Morgan’s Point.
The exercise saw Boat Troop personnel, part of the RBR’s Support Company, deployed around a notional ship and setting up booming equipment to contain escaping fuel.
Support Coy officer Captain Gauntlett, who led the RBR operation, said: “Many of the members of Boat Troop were required to be allowed the day off from their normal jobs in order to help conduct the exercise.
“The Regiment is always grateful to employers, and especially for their flexibility when we’re training for this type of response which, like the Regiment’s hurricane preparedness training, is so important to Bermuda.

RUBiS Energy Bermuda Ltd. has entered into a binding agreement to acquire Bermuda Gas & Utility Company Limited from the Ascendant Group.
Graham Redford, Managing Director of RUBiS Energy Bermuda Ltd, says: “The Bermuda Gas acquisition represents a strategic expansion of RUBiS’ existing LPG business in Bermuda. RUBiS is currently the Island’s leading importer of LPG and the integration of the supply and distribution chains will allow us to expand infrastructure capabilities to better serve our customers.
When we approached the Ascendant Group, and started discussions, one of the critical components that we immediately identified was that we had to ensure that no jobs would be lost as a result of the acquisition. Subsequently, I am happy to announce today that all 18 Bermuda Gas employees will remain with the Company.
The second critical component was that we had to be able to honour all existing supply agreements. Again, I can assure all of Bermuda Gas’ customers that existing supply agreements and equipment warranties are secure.”
Mr. Redford continued: “One of the key advantages of this acquisition to our staff and customers, is being able to combine the knowledge and expertise of RUBiS’ global LPG operations with a company that understands the complexities of the local business environment and is 100% staffed by Bermudians.
RUBiS’ mission is to consistently, safely and effectively deliver customer-driven quality energy solutions for Bermuda. This acquisition certainly allows us to continue to live up to our mission statement as it allows us to strengthen our purchasing power, expand our service capabilities, improve our resource utilisation, and reduce our procurement and administrative burdens in the retail and commercial business segments.
But most importantly, it also enables us to provide the greatest value to our existing, and future, customers and it will allow us to provide Bermuda greater stability in the existing commodity environment.”

RUBiS Energy Bermuda Ltd. announced today that they will be conducting a Tier 1 Oil Spill response training exercise in conjunction with the Royal Bermuda Regiment on Wednesday March 2nd and Thursday March 3rd, 2016. A small group of observers from the US Coast Guard, who are on island to conduct meetings and provide advice in relation to the island’s Search and Recovery and general Maritime enforcement capabilities, will also attend the exercise on March 3rd.
Graham Redford, Managing Director of RUBiS explained: “The aim of this exercise is to test all functions of the internal RUBiS Oil Spill Response Management System, along with external testing of the Island’s ability for an appropriate tiered response in the event of an Oil Spill. We will be working with Oil Spill Response Ltd (OSRL), a global partner of RUBiS. OSRL is the largest international industry-funded cooperative which exists to respond to oil spills anywhere in the world by providing preparedness, response and intervention services from a number of strategically placed locations. We are also pleased to welcome a number of our RUBiS affiliates from the Caribbean who are flying in to observe the training and exercise.
As the leader in the local fuel industry, helping protect the environment is a fundamental responsibility of RUBiS, and one we take very seriously. This exercise is part of our continued commitment towards oil spill and emergency response preparedness, and one of the most effective ways of assessing response plans and procedures, determining the readiness of responders, clarifying roles and responsibilities, promoting awareness of potential incidents and preparing for real spill events.
There will be two days of training; the first day will be on site at our Ferry Reach Depot where we will look at notification exercises to test our response process and mobilisation procedures. We will also be conducting table-top exercises designed to test the risk of our operations and allow for analysis of the incident response along with capability reviews of RUBIS’ tactical and emergency management organisation, our personnel capacity and competence, ours and the Island’s tiered response arrangements and a capability review of our training and exercise programmes.”
Matthew Simmons, Operations Manager from OSRL continued: “A robust exercise and drill programme provides RUBiS’ response and emergency management teams with the opportunity to practice skills that will be required in an emergency, to work together closely and develop working relationships with key stakeholders and to make complex decisions. Using a well-designed exercise will test response capabilities including plans, people, equipment and systems
This exercise will bring together the key personnel likely to be involved in a real incident, will further develop working relationships and encourage teamwork. Utilising OSRL’s expertise in incident response, we are able to provide exercise and drill development, facilitation, observation and involvement to help test and improve their preparedness and response capability.”
Lt. Col. Foster-Brown, Commanding Officer of the Royal Bermuda Regiment added: “Environmental protection is part of our disaster relief capability, and one which we take seriously and hope to expand, pending the decision by Government on a potential lead Maritime role for the Regiment, so we are delighted to support this important oil spill exercise.”
Mr. Redford concluded: “The safety, health and security of everyone we work with is of paramount importance to us, so the equipment deployment exercise that will be held on the March 3rd in the Great Sound will focus on developing all of the stakeholders’ ability to deploy Tier 1 equipment in a safe and effective way. We do ask that the marine public stay a safe distance from the exercises which, dependent on the weather, will be on the southern side of Morgan’s Point.”
